The Gun Dungeon host Derek bought the S&W M&P 10mm Carry Comp to carry, and it’s now his carry gun. This isn’t a first shots video. He has put a lot of rounds through it, and he starts with the bad parts.
What he covers: He bought this one himself and carries it. Nobody sent it to him or paid for the review. He says there are really only two bad things. First, it doesn’t like coated lead. Five or six magazines of it left lead fouling around the comp. “It didn’t affect function,” he says, but it took him about 20 minutes of hard scrubbing to clean. Hard cast bullets left only light discoloration that scraped off in his test. Second, the M2.0 grip texture is very aggressive and rubbed him raw. He also had one malfunction on camera, a round that came out of the magazine a little early. He calls it the first in roughly 700 to 800 rounds, by his count. On the good side, S&W lists it at 27 oz unloaded and his kitchen scale agreed. He says it’s essentially the exact same size as an HK VP9, so you get a full size 9mm footprint in a 10mm. The controls are slightly extended, but he says they don’t get in the way. He calls the flat face trigger fantastic, and he likes that S&W put the front sight behind the comp so soot doesn’t cover it. Next to his Glock 29 with his own loads, the comp didn’t seem to cost much velocity, and he felt less recoil, though he notes the bigger grip may help. He gives it nine and a half out of 10. The one thing he’d change for carry is a 13 round magazine with a slightly shorter grip. Specific claims in the video are his, not ours.
Here’s our take. Buy the M&P 10mm Carry Comp if you want a 10mm carry pistol about the size of a full size 9mm, with the front sight kept clear of the comp. Skip it if you mostly shoot soft coated lead or can’t stand an aggressive grip. One malfunction in his count is a data point, not a reliability test.
