Update, October 9, 2026: ATF announced in an open letter that it no longer requires approval or registration to make or transfer suppressors, short‑barreled rifles, short‑barreled shotguns, and AOWs. These items now transfer like any other firearm, with an ATF Form 4473 and a background check through an FFL, where state and local law allow. There is no Form 4 to wait on and no tax stamp for them. Machine guns and destructive devices are still fully regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA). Prohibited persons still cannot possess any of these items, and the usual federal recordkeeping still applies. State and local laws still apply too. Some states ban these items or only allow registered ones, so check yours before you buy or travel. If you plan to take an SBR or SBS across state lines, the letter says to keep filing a Form 20. ATF will still accept Forms 1, 3, and 4 from anyone who chooses to file them.

What “NFA transfer” means in one paragraph

A suppressor is still defined as a firearm under the National Firearms Act. As of October 9, 2026, ATF no longer requires a Form 4, a tax stamp, or registration before one changes hands. The hardware still moves dealer to dealer (or manufacturer to dealer), not to your porch. Your receiving dealer needs to be an FFL.

Buying the suppressor vs transferring one you already bought

Two common paths:

1. You buy the suppressor from Wulfy’s catalog. You check out online and the can ships to an FFL. You complete a Form 4473 and a background check there before you take possession. The receiving dealer can be Wulfy’s or another FFL you name.
2. You already bought the can elsewhere and want Wulfy’s as your receiving FFL. Send us the item details and the transferring dealer’s info, then we run the steps below.

Wulfy’s four steps

When Wulfy’s is your receiving FFL, the live process is:

1. Submit your information. Send the details of the item and the dealer or person it is coming from. We confirm everything before it ships.
2. We receive it. The item ships to us like any other firearm, and we contact you when it arrives.
3. Form 4473 and background check. You complete an ATF Form 4473 and a background check, the same as any firearm transfer.
4. Pickup. Once the background check clears, you pick up your item. Bring valid ID.
