Colion Noir’s Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical SPX Review: Does a Heat-Shield Rail Make This the Defensive 940?

Does a vented heat-shield rail actually turn Mossberg’s 940 Tactical into a defensive shotgun, or are you paying SPX money for furniture on the same gas gun? Colion Noir put the 940 Pro Tactical SPX on the range next to the regular Tactical to find out.

The short version of what he covers: he already liked the 940 Tactical and called it affordable inside its class, then treats the SPX as that gun with the parts that make a defensive run work. The vented heat-shield forend is the headline. On the plain Tactical he burns his thumb after five or six rounds if he holds it the way he holds a rifle, Costa / Haley C-grip with the thumb up. The shield lets him keep that grip without cooking his hand, and the side vents give him texture to pull the gun in. M-LOK sits far enough back that he can thumb a light without a pressure pad, and Mossberg moved the QD cup off the barrel clamp so the sling stops wrapping the light. In the box: a Vang Comp Velcro side saddle. Ghost-ring irons he says are good enough you do not feel forced into a red dot, even though the receiver is optic-ready. Loading is the part he dwells on. The enlarged, polished elevator means he is not fighting thumb bite. Same tang safety he already liked, same spacer kit for length of pull. On the range he says it shoots like the Tactical, maybe a hair more deliberate because of how the furniture sits, and he is honest that shotgun days still beat you up if you run real defensive loads instead of birdshot. Here’s our take. The SPX is not a new action. If you already own a 940 Tactical, you are buying a heat shield, ghost rings, and a side saddle. If you do not, this is the version that matches how people actually hold a shotgun: thumb up, light on the forend, spare shells on the receiver. Colion is right that a shotgun you hate shooting is a shotgun you will not train with. Watch it with your own wingspan and your own hallway in mind before you pay SPX money for furniture you could bolt on later.
