Should your Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol be the 12 gauge or the newer 20 gauge? Mitch from Langdon Tactical walks through both, covering what the gun does well straight out of the box and who each gauge suits.
What they cover: the factory features on the 12 gauge (a beveled loading port, the Mod 2 forend, and a fiber optic front sight), then the 20 gauge, which Mitch says is about a pound lighter, slimmer, and much softer shooting. They compare its recoil with buckshot and slugs to a .308 AR, and point out the updated stock that can be set shorter and the QD sling mounts at the rear. They also explain why an RMR on the 20 gauge’s factory optic cut sits so low that the front sight fills the view, and show the trigger work, heat shield, and Fast Back optic mount Langdon Tactical sells for Patrol guns bought anywhere. On ammo, Mitch says the 12 gauge runs nearly anything short of very soft loads like less lethal and breaching rounds, while the 20 gauge has a narrower selection but still offers good buckshot, including Federal FliteControl, and good slugs. Specific claims and handling comments in the video are theirs, not ours. It is a short walkthrough of a few minutes rather than a range test.
Here’s our take. Buy the 20 gauge if you want a home defense shotgun that is lighter and easier to shoot fast, especially if most of your trigger time is on carbines, and you can live with a smaller ammo selection. Pick the 12 gauge if you want the widest choice of loads and more payload per shell. Skip the A300 Ultima Patrol if you want a pump action or a hunting setup instead of a defensive one. If you plan to put a red dot on the 20 gauge, budget for a raised mount, because the video shows how low an RMR sits on the factory cut. If you’re torn between the two gauges, the recoil section is the part worth watching.
