Sootch00’s Springfield Prodigy 3.5 Hybrid Review: Does a Short Slide With a Full Grip Actually Shoot Flatter?

Does pairing a 3.5-inch slide with a full-length 18-round grip actually make a double-stack 1911 easier to carry — or are you just buying extra muzzle flip for a shorter holster? Sootch00 put Springfield’s new Prodigy 3.5 Hybrid on the range to find out.

The short version of what he covers: Sootch treats this as the G19X / G45 of the Prodigy line — 3.5-inch bull barrel, full-length grip, 18+1 of 9mm, aluminum frame instead of the all-steel 5-inch gun. He walks the Mec-Gar magazines (two in the box), the AOS plates (RMR, RMSc, Delta Point Pro, Acro, Holosun 509; one plate included), tritium front / serrated rear, ambi safeties, and a recontoured hammer with a memory-bump grip safety. On the range he reports zero malfunctions and less muzzle rise than the short barrel suggested, and he credits the two-piece dual-spring recoil system. Field strip is standard 1911 except the short recoil spring is a bear to get back in. MSRP $1,582.

Here’s our take. The hybrid only makes sense if you want the leverage and 18-round mags of the full-size Prodigy without wearing a 5-inch slide. Sootch is honest that a full-size still wins for competition, and that extra AOS plates cost extra. The surprise is the shooting: a shorter slide on a full grip can be the softer gun, not the snappier one — same reason people like a G45. Watch it with your own hands and holster in mind before you pay 2011 money for a barrel you could have gotten longer.

We stock the Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 3.5 AOS he reviewed. If you want the commander-length gun he compared it to, we have the 4.25-inch Prodigy AOS in stock. And if the 5-inch full-size is the one you’d actually shoot, we stock the 5-inch Prodigy AOS.
