Is the Ruger RXM just another Glock clone? Tactical Toolbox thought so at the announcement, then took one apart. The serialized insert comes out of the grip, and the optic pins move so more than one footprint bolts to the slide.
What they cover: the Ruger RXM in 9mm, set next to a PSA Dagger, a ZEV OZ9, a Springfield Echelon, and a few Glocks. In the box they show two Magpul magazines. A Dagger, they say, ships with one. The sights are optic height, with a tritium vial in the front sight. The optic cut uses movable pins as recoil lugs, so the red dot bolts to the slide instead of locking to one footprint. There are no interchangeable backstraps. The grip is double undercut, with a thumb ledge on both sides, and they say their pinky falls off it the way it does not on a Glock 19. It fit every Glock 19 holster they tried, including one made for no light. The mag release is the Gen 3 part. The trigger housing is proprietary, and the trigger and trigger bar are Gen 3. They say the wall sits farther forward than on other Glocks, with a gap and a stutter before the break. A small spring can jump out during disassembly. They have not broken a pin, but they cite reports of pins breaking in dry fire and on the range, and they say they would run a little over a thousand rounds before serious use. Other owners have reported cycling trouble with Glock magazines. They have not run that test. When they filmed, Magpul had announced a longer grip and a Glock 26 length grip, and neither had shipped. A company called FDC sent the pistol. Ruger did not. Specific claims and results in the video are theirs, not ours. It is a features review of about 29 minutes, not a scored range test.
Here’s our take. Buy the RXM if you want a Glock pattern 9mm you can change grips on without another serialized frame, and you already own Glock 19 holsters. Skip it if you want backstraps, a longer grip from the factory, or a pistol with a published round count. They never give a group size. The trigger gap is theirs, and so are the pin reports they have not reproduced. Watch both before you carry one.
We stock the Ruger RXM they are covering. On the shelf: the RXM 9mm in black, 15+1, 4 inch. Related: the RXM 17+1 and the RXM with a 4.5 inch threaded barrel. The video is the standard pistol. The 17+1 and the threaded barrel are different guns. Complete firearm. Indiana FFL transfer through Wulfy’s. Ask us for current fees.
