Is the Barrett M107A1 the long range rifle movies make it out to be? Mountains, Mullets, Merica! say no. It is a semi auto .50 built for hard targets, and they show what it does once the ammo is the load Barrett designed for it.
What they cover: a factory 29 inch M107A1 in .50 BMG with a 10 round magazine. They call the trigger heavy and mushy, and they say that fits an anti materiel rifle, not a precision rifle. The scope is a Nightforce 5 to 25. The ammo is Barrett’s 660 grain solid copper MTAC load, which Barrett told them is what the factory uses to check these rifles. At 100 yards, two five round groups measured 3.3 MOA and 2 MOA. Leaving out one flyer, nine rounds measured 2.47 MOA. They call it a 2.5 to 3 MOA rifle with this load, against about 5 MOA with Hornady 750 A‑MAX in an earlier test of the same rifle. Nine rounds at 100 yards averaged 2,732 feet per second, with an extreme spread of 32.9 and a standard deviation of 9.9. On a plate of about 2 MOA they hit 5 of 20 at 1,730 yards and 4 of 20 at 2,150 yards. Once the ammo sat in the sun, velocity climbed about 60 feet per second, which they put down to temperature. Modest Tactical Supply sent the rifle. Barrett sent the ammo, with no sponsorship beyond that. Specific claims and results in the video are theirs, not ours. It is a full session of about 29 minutes.
Here’s our take. Buy the M107A1 if you want a semi auto .50 for vehicles and other hard targets, and you can live with the heavy trigger and groups in the range they measured. The rifle in the video is the 29 inch. Skip it if you want precision rifle accuracy. A different .50 load will not shoot like this one did. Their earlier Hornady test is the part worth watching before you assume any bullet will do.
