First Red-Dot Optic: Pistol vs Carbine (With Real Stock Options)

Pistol dots sit on a reciprocating slide. Carbine optics sit on a rail. Buy the shape that matches the mount first, then pick a model. That is the whole decision. The rest of this page maps each path to something we actually have in stock today.

Pistol slide vs carbine rail (start here)

A slide-fire pistol optic has to live through the slide slamming back and forth. Footprint, height, and how you cowitness with irons matter more than brand stories. A carbine optic lives on a Picatinny (or similar) rail. You get more room for mount height, absolute vs lower-1/3 cowitness, and optional magnifiers. Height-over-bore changes how you hold at close range — do not pretend a pistol-cut RMR and a 1×20 tube optic are interchangeable because both “have a red dot.”

If you’re mounting on a pistol

Start with a slide-rated mini reflex, not a rifle tube. The in-stock path here is the Trijicon RMR HD — 3.25 MOA adjustable red dot, about 2.15″ long, 1.69 oz with battery on the listing. That is RMR-money for a reason: it is built for the abuse a slide dishes out. It is overkill if you only want a cheap training optic on a .22 that never leaves the range. It is the right class if the gun is a carry or duty slide cut for an RMR-pattern optic.

If you’re mounting on a carbine

For a 5.56 / general AR rail, two in-stock SIG options cover most first buys:

• SIG Sauer Romeo 5 Gen II — 1×20, 1 MOA red dot, about 2.7″ and 5.5 oz on the listing. This is the common “put a solid 1x on the carbine without spending RMR money” path.
• SIG Sauer Romeo MSR Gen II Compact — also a 1×20 MSR-class red dot, about 2.7″ and 5.7 oz. Pick this when you want the MSR-oriented compact package; pick the Romeo 5 Gen II when you want the familiar Romeo 5 line at the Gen II revision.

When a holographic sight is the better shape

If you want both-eyes-open speed plus a magnifier without stacking three separate shopping trips, look at a holographic weapon sight. The in-stock combo is the EOTech EXPS2-0 green with 3x magnifier (HHS package). Unlike a red dot that reflects an LED off a lens, EOTech’s holographic sights project the reticle into a laser-etched hologram in the window — the reticle stays in focus with the target at different eye positions. This listing’s reticle is the 68 MOA speed ring with a 1 MOA dot; green reticle option (EOTech’s claim: green is roughly 6× easier for the eye to pick up than standard red). Side buttons leave room for the magnifier close behind. Package weight on the listing is 22.4 oz — you are buying a different tool than a 5.5 oz Romeo tube.
